Kathryn R. Johnson

Partner

For over a decade, Kathryn has been a leader in the Iowa workers’ compensation field. She began her career in workers’ compensation clerking for the Iowa Workers’ Compensation Commissioner and was awarded a scholarship from the Iowa Workers’ Compensation Advisory Committee. Since that time, she has represented clients from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies and has successfully navigated all stages of litigation and appeal. Kathryn has been at the forefront of some of the state’s most important legal cases related to employers’ and insurance carriers’ rights and responsibilities. Notably, she achieved a significant victory in the case of Deng v. Farmland Foods, in which she successfully argued the appeal to the Supreme Court of Iowa, setting a precedent for how the 2017 statutory amendments would be applied to shoulder injuries within the state.

Kathryn is a recognized expert in her field and frequently speaks at workers’ compensation seminars and conferences about risk mitigation, regulatory and statutory compliance, and Iowa workers’ compensation issues. She is a member of the Iowa Association of Workers’ Compensation Attorneys and Alliance of Women in Workers’ Compensation. She has also served on the Polk County Juvenile Drug Court Board and the Iowa Association of Women Attorneys.

Kathryn is committed to putting people at the heart of her business and providing them with clear advice and strong representation. Her clients appreciate her collaborative and relationship-based approach to law and her ability to give them valuable insight on how to navigate some of Iowa’s trickiest regulatory and statutory requirements. At the end of the day, she is fiercely loyal and has her client’s backs.

Outside of her legal practice, Kathryn is an alumna of the University of Iowa and an avid Hawkeye fan. She has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, enjoys “flipping” old furniture, hording house plants, and is a better-than-average Euchre player. She lives with her husband, three daughters, and two golden retrievers in the Des Moines metro.
